Cebu Short Mat Bowls Club 2009 Singles Championships

June saw the final day of the second Club Singles Championships held by the Cebu Short Mat Bowls Club. The Club’s Top 16 players battled through to the last day of the tournament by qualifying from their groups. A total of 32 bowlers entered the tournament, comprising men and ladies of all ages and levels of experience. The greatest thing about Short Mat Bowling is that it is truly a game for the whole family, where men and ladies can compete on a level playing surface.

The 32 entrants were divided into 8 groups of 4 players, with the top 2 players in each group progressing to the Top 16 on the final day. There were many very closely fought groups and a special mention to Robert Lilja, Rodolphe Lina and Elsa Whiteway, who all narrowly missed the cut. Included in the Top 16 were Neil Lindsay and Michael Johnson who were unfortunately unable to attend on the day. Their places were taken by Geoff Thomas and Josh Nowell, respectively.

The starting line up on the day of the finals saw a very strong field of bowlers who have certainly impressed over the past year and a half that we have been bowling here in Cebu. Included were the Number 1 cede after the group stages, Bob Ward and the defending Club Singles Champion, Kirk Bradley.

The Top 16 format is played as a straight knock-out, with the loser in each game eliminated. The 2^nd round saw some very close games, with the youngest player in the field, Lyka Rugg, snatching a single shot victory over last year’s runner-up, Richard Nowell. Trey Bishop caused an upset by securing a hard fought 3 shot win over reigning Club Pairs and Fours Champion, Annilou Thomas. Marvz Allison continued her fine form from the group stages by narrowly edging Paul Whiteway in a thrilling encounter.

The Quarter and Semi Final matches all seemed to turn into rather one sided affairs in terms of score line, but this in no way reflected the standard of bowls being played and the determination of those bowlers who were unlucky enough to find themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard. A prime example of this was seen in the Quarter Final match between Geoff Thomas and Damien Allison. Geoff was holding shot on a number of occasions, only for Damien to snatch the end with his final bowl.

A very special mention must go to the husband and wife pairing of Bob and Kristine Ward. Bob has consistently been one of the club’s top bowlers since taking up the sport in the last year and Kristine must be the Club’s most improved bowler, having only really started to play regularly this year. Fine performances from them both in securing 3^rd equal positions in this year’s Club Singles Championships. They will certainly be a force to be reckoned with as a team in the 2009 Club Pairs Championships, which starts in July!

Defending Champion, Kirk Bradley, found himself in familiar territory by quietly and confidently easing himself through each round and into his second Grand Final appearance in as many years. This year his opponent would be the experienced bowler, Damien Allison. Damien’s consistent draw bowling throughout the day had seen him steadily advance to the final.

With most of the players and spectators staying to the very end to witness the final, the atmosphere was fantastic and both Kirk and Damien would have been excused for showing signs of nerves. Would Kirk’s experience from the 2008 final help him handle the pressure of this boiler room atmosphere and see him to victory, or would Damien’s consistency over a longer 15 end final see him first past the finish line?

At the end of a very closely contested 15 end final, it was Damien’s consistent draw bowling that enabled him to wrest the title from the Defending Champion, Kirk, at the end of what was a superb day of bowls and socializing.
